Know What to Look For

Some Credit Counseling Is Beneficial
Passed on October 17, 2005, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 required that before filing for bankruptcy, most applicants must attend credit counseling in a government-approved program. You can obtain a list of approved agencies from the United States Bankruptcy Court of the Northern District of Illinois.
In addition to these agencies, some credit unions and nonprofit organizations provide free or low-cost credit counseling assistance. Generally, nonprofit organizations such as these provide trustworthy advice and genuine help for people facing debt problems or foreclosure if you want additional help or are choosing an alternative to bankruptcy.
Some mortgage lenders also offer a form of credit counseling. However, people often have difficulty understanding their mortgage documents and terms. Others may find that their lenders are difficult to work with. Having an attorney represent you may be the better option.
